Secondary results

We remain one of the country’s top performing academy networks at GCSE and A level.

This is despite the fact that, this year, our pupils faced big challenges: two-thirds of GCSE pupils were eligible for the pupil premium, compared with a national average of just 26%. Over a quarter of our pupils started secondary school behind expected levels. Twice as many had special educational needs as the national average, and nearly three times as many spoke English as an additional language.

In many other schools, these pupils wouldn't succeed. But at one of our schools they're more likely to get the results that give them real choices in future.

Our GCSE results:

  • 71% of Ark students were awarded A*-C in maths, above the national average of 62%
  • 72% of pupils achieved A*-C grades in English, compared with a national figure of 62%.
  • Overall, the numbers of Ark pupils getting 5 good GCSEs including English and maths went up by 3 percentage points
  • There were notable improvements in Ebacc achievement in all but one of our schools.

Our schools had some huge successes:

  • King Solomon Academy in London had their first GCSE results - and 93% of students gained 5 A*-C grades including English and maths. These results make King Solomon Academy one of the top 10 schools in the country, despite being located in the poorest ward in London.
  • 79% of students at Charter Academy in Portsmouth got 5 good GCSEs including English and maths. Back in 1999, before it was an Ark school, not a single pupil achieved this.
  • At Ark Kings Academy in Birmingham, there was a 22 percentage point improvement in the number of pupils getting G5 A*-C GCSEs including English and maths.

The table below shows the proportion of pupils passing five GCSEs at A*-C including English and mathematics in 2014.
